SDLC vs STLC Explained for Engineers and QA Hires

SDLC vs STLC explained with a US SaaS lens — phases, entry/exit criteria, and how testing plugs into Agile delivery. Start a free QA audit or contact TestSync Lab.

SDLC builds the product; STLC assures quality

The Software Development Life Cycle (SDLC) covers how software is imagined, built, released, and maintained: requirements, design, implementation, testing, deployment, maintenance. The Software Testing Life Cycle (STLC) is the quality track inside that journey: requirement analysis for testability, test planning, test design, environment setup, execution, and closure.

STLC is not a waterfall handoff after coding. In healthy Agile US teams, STLC activities run in parallel from the first story refinement.

Phases that matter in practice

STLC requirement analysis: clarify acceptance criteria, risks, and dependencies. Planning: scope, tools, roles, entry/exit criteria. Design: cases, data, automation candidates. Environment: staging parity, accounts, feature flags. Execution: smoke, functional, regression, reporting. Closure: metrics, lessons, deferred risk.

SDLC still owns architecture and coding standards. QA influences them through early reviews — that is verification overlapping both cycles. Do not invent a parallel bureaucracy; map STLC steps onto your existing sprint ceremonies.

Entry and exit criteria keep debates short

Example entry for system test: build passed unit tests, smoke green on staging, test data seeded, known open defects listed. Example exit: critical/high defects resolved or waived in writing, regression pack green, release notes include known issues. Without criteria, “done” means whoever spoke last.

Publish criteria in the test plan or Notion page every contractor can find. Update them when you change release cadence — weekly ship teams need lighter gates than quarterly enterprise drops.

Where an external lab fits

If your SDLC is fine but STLC is ad hoc, you do not need a process consultant — you need executed testing with clear artifacts. TestSync Lab plugs into your sprint tools and owns the STLC execution slice.

Start with a free QA audit on /contact. Retainers begin at $999. AI feature testing follows a parallel STLC-style plan and is priced separately from product QA.
