Playwright vs Selenium for Startups: Which Suite Should You Start?

A founder-friendly comparison of Playwright and Selenium — speed, CI fit, and when TestSync Lab recommends each. Start a free QA audit or contact TestSync Lab.

The decision that matters is reliability, not brand

Playwright and Selenium can both protect a release. Startups fail when they pick a tool from a Twitter thread, then automate every button before the product is stable.

We recommend Playwright for most new web products: fast, modern traces, and a smaller flake surface in CI. We still use Selenium when a client already has a suite, a grid, or a compliance constraint that prefers it.

Where Playwright wins for early teams

Auto-waiting, tracing, and first-class TypeScript support mean a two-person QA pod can keep a smoke suite honest. That matters more than covering 200 selectors.

Wire the suite into CI on every pull request. Treat a flake as a production bug: quarantine, fix the cause, restore trust. A red suite that everyone ignores is worse than no suite.

When Selenium is still the right call

Keep Selenium if the existing investment is healthy, if you must target a specific grid, or if the org already has Selenium skills you do not want to throw away. Rewrites are expensive; stabilization is cheaper.

Our Growth and Scale retainers include this exact choice: we do not migrate you for sport. Book a free QA audit and we will say whether to keep, wrap, or replace what you have.
